Fully agreed with your account of mission creep, and your essays are very useful for me, though my own focus is a bit different. What I note is how much your reading of AI overlaps with Barba-Kay’s analysis of the handheld device as a “natural technology”. He offers a supreme explication of the phenomenon of new tech determining the range of recognized problems and human choices in response. Arguably more apposite, given your concerns, than Floridi’s. Do you know Barba-Kay’s work? To read your essays is to think of Barba-Kay.

Given the way digital tech has saturated and reset us as social animals, we are arguably already in a nascent digital totalitarianism. My own concern is how AI’s knack for mimicking us, for giving the illusion of personality, makes it something entirely new, and something we certainly won’t be able to handle.

Most people aren’t facing how susceptible we are to the Delusion that will soon be on offer.

Hi Eric. Yes, in our book we cite Barba-Kay. That's all I have time for right now but keep sharing your observations.
