What is unique in our time is that digitality offers democratic transcendence of the capitalist kind. No one needs Nebudchanezzar's imperial might to declare “I am a god”. It is precisely what Paul Kingsnorth's "Machine" would do - make digital transcendance cheap, not free; then promise freedom, cheapening the humanity it promised to transcend. Feels like a tragedy of epic proportions where upon achieving godhood one then realises that Odin just needed your body as parts for his war machine.

Excellent! "Metaphysics without any disruption in fundamental materialism"! This metaphysics is rooted in the long-held belief/assumption that mind/consciousness is merely a byproduct of bio-mechanical complexity. If the mind springs from a bio-mechanical brain, then our intelligence is already, in this sense, artificial. And why shouldn't we be able to use this (assumed) fundamental characteristic of reality to build a brain that engenders mind? But, without this assumption, "artificial intelligence" is an obvious oxymoron. As always, it's all fundamentally "religious" in the sense that it all depends on what one assumes/believes about reality.
